Synthetic and Bone tissue engineering graft substitutes: What is the future?

چکیده

The management of large segmental bone defects caused by trauma or disease remains clinically challenging within orthopaedics. major impediment to healing with current treatment options is insufficient vascularization and incorporation graft material. Lack rapid adequate leads cellular necrosis the inner regions implanted material a failure regeneration. Current for critical size include continued “gold standard” autograft, allograft, synthetic substitutes, vascularized fibular graft, induced membrane technique, distraction osteogenesis. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) an exciting prospect defects; however, clinical integration engineered scaffolds low. We believe that barrier application constructs lies in lack concomitant these scaffolds. This mini-review outlines progress made significant limitations remaining successful substitutes defects.

The Efficacy of Synthetic Bone Graft Substitutes

One of the most difficult challenges in orthopaedics is the treatment of large bone voids or defects. While autografts have traditionally been considered a standard treatment, this procedure has been associated with complications such as increased incidence of pain, nerve injury, arterial damage, harvest site fracture, hematoma, infection, and compromised patient function. Synthetic bone graft ...

Bone graft substitutes and bone morphogenetic proteins for osteoporotic fractures: what is the evidence?

Despite improvements in implants and surgical techniques, osteoporotic fractures remain challenging to treat. Among other major risk factors, decreased expression of morphogenetic proteins has been identified for impaired fracture healing in osteoporosis. Bone grafts or bone graft substitutes are often used for stabilizing the implant and for providing a scaffold for ingrowth of new bone. Both ...

Chapter 1 | Bone Graft Substitutes: Past, Present, and Future

INTRODUCTION The field of medicine as a formal discipline has been traced by many to Imhotep and his descriptions of ailments and treatments found written on papyrus and translated in the mid-1800s by Edwin Smith [1]. Among the medical descriptions included in Imhotep’s writings are cervical dislocations, skull fractures, and compound fractures [1]. Indeed, mummies found in Egyptian tombs have ...

Bone-grafting and bone-graft substitutes.

Bone grafts are often necessary to provide support, fill voids, and enhance biologic repair of skeletal defects. Autogenous bone recovered from the patient’s own iliac crest is generally considered the gold standard of bone grafts. There is a need for alternatives, however, because of limited autograft quantities, donor site morbidity, and other problems including limited biologic performance. ...

Engineering bone tissue substitutes from human induced pluripotent stem cells.

Congenital defects, trauma, and disease can compromise the integrity and functionality of the skeletal system to the extent requiring implantation of bone grafts. Engineering of viable bone substitutes that can be personalized to meet specific clinical needs represents a promising therapeutic alternative. The aim of our study was to evaluate the utility of human-induced pluripotent stem cells (...
